Caleb Williams' Improvement Has Been Amazing

Caleb WIlliams has been a work in progress since the beginning. During camp, the first string offense didn't face the second string defense. Caleb faced the first string defense to prepare him for the regular season.

When the season began the offensive line did not do Williams any favors. He was under pressure in his first start in the NFL. His statline for his first game was hardly noteworthy: Williams completed 14 of his 29 attempts for only 93 yards.

The following week the offensive line was so porous, Williams was pressured on 40 of his 44 passing attempts and was sacked SEVEN TIMES. There were also times where it was apparent WIlliams and his receivers were not on the same page. The 4th down pass to an open Rome Odunze could have set up the Bears for a come-from-behind victory, but the ball fell incomplete, ending the drive.

In week three, Caleb WIlliams had a breakout game, especially in the second half. Despite falling the Indianapolis Colts 21-16, the offense rallied for two touchdowns, Williams set a Bears rookie record with 363 yards passing. He connected on his first two passing touchdowns as well. His first TD was caught by fellow rookie, Rome Odunze. He also connected with Cole Kmet, for his second TD.

In week four, Williams was only asked to throw the ball 23 times, completing 17 for 157 yards and one TD. The Bears defeated the L. A. Rams 24-18. But it was two touchdown drives on consecutive possessions that we saw the offense start to gel.

After a Rams field goal made the score 10-9 with just under nine minutes to play in the 3rd quarter, the Bears began a drive from their 26-yard line. Williams led the Bears on a 12-play 74-yard drive to extend the Bears lead to 17-9.

After the Rams scored again to cut the lead to 17-15, they attempted to tie the game with a two-point conversion, but Matthew Stafford's pass fell incomplete.

The Drive of the Game

The offense needed to answer the Rams scored and it only took five plays. A Swift run good for 5 yards, and three completions by Williams, including a 22-yard catch and run by Kmet put the ball on the Rams 36-yard line. D'Andre Swift, with great blocking by the OL sprung loose for a 36-yard TD run. The Bears defeated the Rams 24-18 to even their record at 2-2.

Another 300 Yard Passing Day For Williams.

The Bears overwhelmed the Carolina Panthers in week five, 36-10. Caleb WIlliams had another 300-yard game. Williams was 20/29 for 304 yards and two touchdowns (both to DJ Moore).

Take a look at Williams first five games:

Week 1: 93

Week 2: 174

Week 3: 363

Week 4: 157

Week 5: 304

Williams last three touchdown passes have been to DJ Moore. And to Williams' credit, Moore was not his first read on all three TDs.

After a poor start to his NFL career, Williams is now on pace to throw for 3,709 yards. That would rank third all-time in Bears history behind Erik Kramer (3,838 in 1995) and Jay Cutler (3,812 in 2014).

Williams needs to average 242.5 yards per game to be the first Bears QB to throw for 4,000 yards.
